perfection

I'm not perfect. It's a frustration. What bogs me down? Anything can bog me down. Stress, exhaustion, laziness, stupidity, you name it. Life sucks ;(

wtf did they say that building name was?

I don't understand why developers give their projects pretentious labels.

Soho means south of Houston Street. That's in New York, USA. Why name a development in Mandaluyong SOHO?

Tribeca is another district in New York. It stands for Triangle below Canal Street. To call a development Tribeca, SUCAT is outright cheesy, right?

Bellagio is a municipality in Italy. It's so pretty that the Bellagio name was used by kitsch Las Vegas casino owners to build the Bellagio Resort. A local developer loved the tasteless concept and built a bad copy in Taguig. To make matters worse, they placed tidbits of Venice to complete the theme park like high end residences.

I have not been there. Did they really reconstruct the Realto bridge? What do you call a copy cat of a corny concept?

Is it really so difficult to think of new names or concepts that provide design solutions to improve daily living? I think if a developer starts with a bad name, other things follow. It's a lazy attitude.
Eventually you will see this in how a developer manages their properties. From quality of construction to building administration. Names provide an insight on how the developers behave.

A few developers at least took a little effort to invent names like Alveo, Nuvali, Punta Fuego, Amaia Scapes, Avida, Villa Alegre and Acacia Estates. Now that was not so hard, was it?

A developer in San Pedro, Laguna called their subdivision La Marea. I had to look up the meaning because it translated to something like "sea sick" or "motion sickness." I was wrong. La Marea means "The Waves." Nice name I thought. Perfect if there were actually waves in San Pedro, Laguna. They have hills. The property should have been named Las Colinas.

El Viento. El Sol. La Niebla. La Puesta del Sol. La CULATA! I can invent names that could be a spring board of concepts. I don't even know Spanish!

Try out local names. Rizal Towers. Mabini Heights. Zara Estates (gregorio zara is pinoy po). Pwede diba?

Developers do not have to look far. Names define places or is it the other way around? Even the bus operators in Cubao had the historical sense to call one station Alibangbang Station named after the sleazy Alibangbang Night Club that operated along EDSA in the 80's. It was later re named Bang Ali-ali after a raid but the original name stayed in the memory of the bus drivers.

Developers have a lot of power and opportunity to "develop." Why do they have to copy or copy badly?

I think the tower in Welcome rotunda should have been named Grand Inihaw Heights.

insatiable desire to make a better world

Don't you have that desire to help make the world a better place to live in? I often think about how to help others but ignore how to help myself. What do you call that?

sometimes you win, sometimes you loose

It's ok Daddy, sometimes you win, sometimes you loose.

That's what my daughter told me this evening after I shared the news that I lost a design bid. I feel bad for several reasons. Business is, of course, primary.

Second reason I feel bad is that the winning bidder has an unscrupulous reputation of partnering with contractors. They will most probably donate the design service but get their fees from the winning contractors. There's no civil law against that. It's all a matter of conscience.

That's what the architect's code dictate. It's all a matter of personal interpretation of what's right or wrong. I always design / make design decisions based on what I believe is right or wrong. Maybe that's not the way to go. It's probably a bad business decision; having my own professional decisions lie between a contract and a job I can comfortably sleep on.

I have a daughter to told me the meaning of bidding. Sometimes you win, sometimes you don't. She's right. Zoe and her 6 year old mind told me what bidding is all about.
